What are OS Grid References for?

We’re often asked about using Ordnance Survey grid references in navigation but always start with a simple point: Grid References don’t help you to navigate! It may sound a little odd, but ordnance survey grid references are just a means of explaining where you are (or want to be) to somebody else. They don’t help you to work out how to get to your destination. They’re useful for arranging meeting points with others or in an emergency when you need to pass your location on to the emergency services.

How to give OS Grid References

In this video, we’ll explain what OS grid references are used for and how to work out a grid reference to give to somebody else. If you’d like to learn more or think you’d benefit from a navigation course, check out our courses here or get in touch.
